According to the legend, the presiding deities of the temple, Maa Tara and Maa Tarini were once two beautiful sisters living in the village of Padmapur in Odisha. They were known for their unparalleled beauty, kindness and compassion. 

Despite being from a poor family, the two sisters believed in giving alms to the needy and poor. One day, an old woman visited their house and asked for alms. The sisters gave her their only pair of golden earrings, which were their most prized possessions.

As an expression of gratitude, the old woman appeared before them in a divine form and revealed that she was Goddess Tara. She blessed the sisters and granted them a boon to be worshipped forever in the form of goddesses.

The story of Tara Tarini – A Hindu Mythological Tale

According to Hindu mythology, the story of Tara Tarini goes as follows: Once upon a time, Lord Brahma created a demon named Vidyapati, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Vidyapati always worshiped Lord Shiva with sincere devotion, which made him very powerful. Eventually, he became so powerful that he started to threaten the balance of the universe. To stop Vidyapati’s reign of terror, Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful woman named Mohini and tried to distract him.

Vidyapati was so enchanted by Mohini’s beauty that he followed her wherever she went. At one point, Mohini led Vidyapati to the top of a mountain, where she revealed her true form as Mohini-Maa Tara. Mohini-Maa Tara then asked Vidyapati to surrender to her, but he refused, thinking that he could easily defeat her. In the ensuing battle, Vidyapati was killed, and with his death, the Once upon a time, Lord Brahma created a beautiful woman known as Adi Shakti or the Primordial Force. He also created two demons, Sumbha and Nisumbha, who were given a boon that they would only be defeated by a female. The demons became very powerful and started harassing the gods and humans, and nobody could defeat them.

The gods then approached Adi Shakti for help, and she took the form of two ferocious goddesses – Tara and Tarini – who rode on two giant birds and set out to defeat the demons. The goddesses fought a fierce battle with the demons and eventually killed them.

It is said that the two goddesses then took residence on a hill in present-day Odisha, where their temple is now located. The temple is believed to be a powerful source of energy and is visited by thousands of devotees every year in search of blessings and fulfillment of their wishes.
