Srikalahasti derives its name from three ardent devotees of Lord Shiva: Sri (Spider), Kala (Serpent), and Hasti (Elephant). According to mythology, these creatures worshipped Lord Shiva with unwavering devotion. Pleased by their faith, Lord Shiva blessed them and combined their names with the Vayu Lingam, leading to the name Srikalahasteeswara.
The temple also holds the tale of Ghanakala, who was cursed to become a ghost. After chanting the Bhairava Mantra and praying for 15 years at Srikalahasti, Lord Shiva restored her original form. Legends also speak of Mayura, Chandra, and Devendra being freed from their curses after bathing in the Swarnamukhi River and praying at the temple.
